✅ START: Parker Washington (JAX) vs. Browns
Washington heads into Week 1 as the Jaguars' most trusted receiver, and the summer buzz only backs that up.
He closed 2025 as the Jaguars' de facto WR1, topping 100 yards in three of his final four games and finishing 16th leaguewide in yards per route run (2.20).
ESPN's Michael DiRocco reported on August 20 that Jacksonville is "reluctant" to take Washington off the field, with him and Jakobi Meyers leading the WR room in snaps across both 11 and 12 personnel this summer… DiRocco said Washington has "established himself" as the No. 1 receiver.
He's working through an undisclosed injury right now but is expected back next week, and his postseason volume (7 catches, 107 yards, a TD in the Wild Card loss) shows exactly what the role looks like when healthy.
The name recognition may lag behind the role… trust the role.
❌ SIT: Xavier Worthy (KC) vs. Broncos
Worthy has a talent case, but too much is unsettled to trust him in Week 1.
His 2025 (WR59) was wrecked by a dislocated shoulder and ankle injuries while Mahomes was out with an ACL/LCL tear; a lost season more than a true form.
He now has to share the field with Rashee Rice, and it's still unclear what this retooled Chiefs offense even looks like early in the year.
Kansas City's WR schedule swings hard in the wrong direction (from 5th-easiest in 2025 to a projected 3rd-hardest this year) and critics still point to a lack of spatial awareness and shaky deep-ball chemistry with Mahomes.
Too many moving parts and too little clarity to trust him out of the gate.
✅ START: Chris Godwin (TB) @ Bengals
Emeka Egbuka's health is the whole ballgame here, and right now it's tilting Godwin's way.
Godwin has been positioned as the Bucs' "primary veteran target" and the leader of the receiving room following Mike Evans' departure.
Egbuka has been managing a toe injury since mid-August… he was working with trainers last week and only returned to practice with the team on Monday, right before the Week 1 opener.
When healthy last season, Godwin showed flashes of what he can still be, going for 7 catches, 108 yards, and a touchdown against Miami in Week 17 (the week’s WR4)
If Egbuka's toe isn't fully behind him, the volume funnels straight to Godwin in Week 1.
❌ SIT: Carnell Tate (TEN) vs. Jets
Tate has real talent, but the situation around him is too murky to trust in Week 1.
Titans coach Robert Saleh said Tate is "working out some stiffness" and sat out Tuesday's practice… not a major red flag on its own, but one more thing to monitor.
He's stepping into an offense that ranked 30th in scoring in 2025, running behind a line ETR ranked 32nd in the league, with a sophomore quarterback in Cam Ward still finding his footing.
He'll also be sharing targets with Calvin Ridley and Wan'Dale Robinson, teammates who can offer Ward easier, lower-risk looks early on.
Let the offense show something real before you trust the target competition.
✅ START: Ladd McConkey (LAC) vs. Cardinals
With Keenan Allen out of the picture, McConkey steps right back into the role he thrived in as a rookie against a defense built to let him do it.
The target competition that capped his 2025 (namely Allen) is gone, and he already carried a healthy 21.3% target share last year even in a crowded room.
His separation skills are elite across the board: 13th in the NFL in target separation, and per Reception Perception, a 76.5% success rate vs. man and 84.0% vs. zone
The matchup helps, too. The Cardinals allowed 26.5 points per game to wide receivers last season, the 27th-ranked mark in the league.
A clean role, a clean matchup… this is close to the best-case Week 1 setup.
❌ SIT: DJ Moore (BUF) @ Texans
The change of scenery is real, but the Week 1 matchup is not the spot to bet on it.
Moore's 2025 in Chicago was a career-low across the board: 50 catches, 682 yards, an overall WR35 finish… as his role shrank behind Rome Odunze, Luther Burden, and Colston Loveland late in the year.
He's now adjusting to a new team, a new quarterback in Josh Allen, and a "higher-flying" scheme under new OC Joe Brady, all things that can take some time to click.
The Texans were one of the stingier defenses against wide receivers last season.
A talented player walking into a tough opening matchup and a still-gelling offense… let him prove it before you rely on him.
That's the board for Week 1. Trust Washington, Godwin, and McConkey to be part of your lineup; give Worthy, Tate, and Moore a week to sort themselves out before you commit.
